Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy focused on evaluating and treating the muscles, tissues, breathing patterns, posture, and movement systems connected to pelvic health. The goal is to both educate and help address symptoms related to bladder, bowel, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, pelvic pain, core weakness, and sexual health concerns

Many women are unsure whether their symptoms are related to the pelvic floor or if physical therapy can help. If you are unsure where to start, you are welcome to send a text or email to schedule a brief 5 to 10 minute complimentary consultation to discuss your concerns and determine the best next steps for your care.

DivineVagine Physical Therapy is an out-of-network, private-pay practice. Payment is due at the time of service, and cash, major credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are accepted.
Being an out-of-network practice allows your care to be based on your individual needs rather than insurance visit limits or authorization requirements. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network reimbursement for physical therapy services. Upon request, a superbill can be provided for eligible patients to submit directly to their insurance provider. We recommend contacting your insurance company before your appointment to better understand your out-of-network physical therapy benefits and reimbursement eligibility.
Due to current Medicare regulations, DivineVagine Physical Therapy is unable to provide services or issue superbills for Medicare beneficiaries. If you are a Medicare beneficiary and have questions about your options, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are happy to help guide you toward the most appropriate resources whenever possible.

Do I need a referral?
No. New Jersey is a direct access state, which means patients can begin physical therapy treatment without a physician referral or prescription in many cases. However, New Jersey law requires a licensed healthcare provider's signature on the plan of care within 30 days of starting treatment in order to continue physical therapy services. If ongoing treatment is recommended, you will be asked to provide the name of your physician or other appropriate healthcare provider so the required signature can be obtained.
-
Every patient and treatment plan is different. Frequency and duration of care depend on your symptoms, goals, medical history, and response to treatment. Your recommended plan of care will be discussed during your first appointment.

An internal pelvic floor examination is one of the many tools your physical therapist may use to better understand your symptoms. With your permission, a gloved finger is gently inserted vaginally to assess how your pelvic floor muscles are functioning, including muscle strength, coordination, areas of tension or tenderness, and the muscles' ability to contract and relax.
An internal examination may be recommended for concerns such as pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, urinary leakage, bowel dysfunction, feelings of pelvic pressure, or difficulty relaxing the pelvic floor. However, it is never required to receive treatment. Every examination is explained beforehand, performed only with your consent, and can be modified, stopped, or declined at any time.

Do I need an internal pelvic floor examination?
Not always. An internal pelvic floor examination is only recommended when it is clinically appropriate for your symptoms and may provide additional information to help guide your treatment. Your physical therapist will explain why an internal examination is being recommended and discuss how the findings may help direct your care.
If you choose not to have an internal examination, there are often many other treatment options available. Your care will always be individualized based on your comfort level and treatment goals.
If an internal pelvic floor examination is performed, your physical therapist will provide a portable treatment table, gloves, lubrication, and disposable protective pads for the session. Patients are kindly asked to have one sheet available for the treatment table, as well as an additional sheet or blanket for comfort and coverage during the examination.

Whether your appointment is in person or virtual, wear something comfortable that you can easily move around in. Athletic wear, leggings, shorts, or a comfortable T-shirt are all great options. Depending on your symptoms and goals, your session may include movement assessments or exercises.
